A special sub-patch must be used to restore the structure of the material then the surface can be fixed to look good.

Leather will last a lifetime if the finish is properly maintained. This is so important because when the finish is opened up it allows moisture and dirt to get into the leather and degrade it from the inside. On leather that is in direct contact with skin like with steering wheels and furniture the sweat will soak into the leather and can prevent it from being repaired. So when you have surface wear get it repaired and it will continue to look great for years to come.
