Chrome Wheel Refurbishment – Making your old chrome rims look like new.
This is how I restored the finish on a set of four chrome rims and make them look almost as good as new. Unfortunately there was some rust and damage that wouldn’t go away. Considering how they looked when I started I am pleased with how they chrome rims turned out.
I found these tires and rims just in time to get the winter tires and studs off my truck. I was looking for some rubber that I could run through the hot summer we get here and the rims came with it.
There was a significant amount of rust in the recesses and some of the pits were to deep and I just couldn’t get them buffed out. The picture below shows what I had to take on.
After a bit of research online in some 4×4 forums I learned that the best thing to polish chrome is Nevr Dull. If you haven’t used it before I have to say that it works great on chrome. I was able to remove 90% of the rust on these rims with the Nevr Dull. I was actually really shocked that it worked so well.
For the worst of the rust I used some fine steel wool to gently buff the rust off and try and restore the surface. I simply kept alternating back and forth between the Nevr Dull and the steel wool where needed and eventually I ended up with a pretty good finish.
I was prepared to accept some pits since it was obvious that the rust had got pretty bad. It was nice to see that the spots that looked real bad actually cleaned up to be just a small spot.
